They sweep their arm out in grandiose gesture, creating the inescapable impression that their modest table of wares is some grand parlor. This show of hospitality very nearly convinces you—but the void remains implacably featureless.

You explain that you don't know why you're here. Their modest laugh feels designed to flatter, as if they believe you've just told a clever joke.

"I daresay that is the case for us all. Wouldn't you agree?"

Exasperated, you tell them you would simply like to know the way out, please.

"Leaving so soon? I suppose I can't fault you for finding the place lacking. There's precious little to recommend it—present company excluded, of course!"

It dawns on you with mounting unease that they are unlikely to provide straightforward answers. You may have to indulge them with conversation, and hope they come around to your concerns in their own time.
